CARREÑO: Margariteña
RACHMANINOFF: Piano Concerto No. 2
MAHLER: Symphony No. 1

Program Notes

Conductor Rafael Payare and pianist Kirill Gerstein both make their debuts with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra this weekend.  Rafael Payare will transport you to his homeland of Venezuela as he leads a Pittsburgh Symphony premiere of Inocente Carreño’s sweeping and spirited Margariteña.  Full of expressive Venezuelan folk melodies and rhythms, Margariteña succeeds in bringing this South American flavor to life in the concert hall.  Next, enjoy Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 performed by Gilmore Artist Award winner, Kirill Gerstein.  Best known for its lush second movement, Rachmaninoff’s transcendent Concerto No. 2 has been quoted and referenced in numerous film scores and pop songs and remains one of the most beloved classical piano concertos.  To conclude the concert, Rafael Payare conducts the Pittsburgh Symphony in Gustav Mahler’s “titanic” Symphony No. 1.

Run Time: This performance will last approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes.
