RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Capriccio espagnol
SHOSTAKOVICH Cello Concerto No. 1
TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 1, "Winter Dreams"

Program Notes

Passion. Depth. Flair. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra dives into the lush melodies of Russia’s most famous composers.  Making his highly anticipated PSO debut, Spanish conductor Pablo Heras-Casado brings a distinctly Spanish flavor to Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol, while also exploring Tchaikovsky’s folkloric Symphony No. 1 “Winter Dreams.”  This weekend also sees the return of cellist phenom, Maximilian Hornung, who dazzled Pittsburgh’s audiences in his 2017 debut.  Hornung brings his technical brilliance to the forefront as he performs Shostakovich’s fiery Cello Concerto No. 1.

A pre-concert talk, beginning one hour prior to the performance in the auditorium, will be led by Associate Conductor Andrés Franco. This talk is open to all ticketholders.

Conductor Pablo Heras-Casado and Cellist Maximilian Hornung will be signing autographs during intermission. Mr. Hornung’s newest release Shostakovich & Tsintsadze: Cello Concertos of 1966 (not available to the public until November 12) will also be available for purchase in the Lobby!

Immediately following the concert, join us for an on-stage performance of Mozart’s Overture to Le nozze di Figaro, Bach’s Sarabande from Suite No. 6 in D major and Popper’s Polonaise de Concert, Opus 14, featuring Maximilian Hornung, Bronwyn Banerdt, Will Chow & Charlie Powers, cello. This performance is open to all ticketholders and you are encouraged to move closer to the stage to enjoy this special performance!
