About this Performance

In Rachmaninoff’s final composition, we hear a culmination of his multifaceted career in the thoughtful, sometimes mournful, Symphonic Dances. The rhythmic melodies point to his Russian background, while the Dies Irae theme (a type of ancient apocalyptic chant) hints at a potentially darker ending.

Also on this program, hear Francesco Piemontesi perform Brahms’ First Piano Concerto, partially written as a portrait of Clara Schumann, alongside Unsuk Chin’s quotation of Beethoven in her forcefully brilliant work.
