About this Performance

Reduced to the status of a “non-person” during the Stalin regime, Shostakovich consistently used his artistic stance to speak against the tyranny of the Russian government. In his Tenth Symphony, we hear the composer’s reflection in light of Stalin’s death, clearly harkening back to a heinous time where millions died under his rule. Yet stay patient for the momentary triumph illustrated at the end of this dark symphony, knowing that good ultimately did conquer evil.

Also, hear the “serious, intelligent and virtuosic music-making” (The Observer) of Kirill Gerstein in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1, filled with nods to Mozart but still overpouring with Beethoven’s own unique style.
