PITTSBURGH SYMPHONY: SPRING 2022 CALENDAR

Experience “Jurassic Park in Concert” at Heinz Hall in July

Spring concerts continue with Beethoven in Your Neighborhood and more than a dozen Classical and Pops concerts in person and livestreamed

PITTSBURGH, PA—Relive the magic of “Jurassic Park” on the big screen accompanied by a thrilling live performance by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Tickets are on sale now for this exciting experience at Heinz Hall on July 9 and 10, 2022, that features the magical cinema partnership of Steven Spielberg and John Williams.

A groundbreaking action-packed adventure of the ultimate battle between man and prehistoric predators, each concert will contain the original, full-length “Jurassic Park” film projected on an HD screen accompanied by the full symphony orchestra performing John Williams’ iconic score live with the movie. Pre-sale tickets are available now to Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra subscribers and donors at the Concerto Club level; the general public on sale date is April 22, 2022. Ticket prices range from $25-$105 and are available at the Heinz Hall Box Office online at pittsburghsymphony.org, by phone at 412.392.4900, or in person at 600 Penn Ave. in downtown Pittsburgh.

BEETHOVEN IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD LIBRARY PROJECT:
First announced in early April, the Pittsburgh Symphony’s “Beethoven In Your Neighborhood: Library Project” concerts take place from May 4 to June 29, 2022, at original Pittsburgh library locations commissioned by Andrew Carnegie. Together with the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County Library Association and MuseumLab, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra invites Pittsburgh to enjoy the musical genius of Ludwig van Beethoven and the community’s historic library system. Each event in the free, 16-concert series will feature musical hosts, local historians and librarians, as well as a performance of one of Beethoven’s 16 string quartets performed by Pittsburgh Symphony string musicians.

SPRING 2022 BNY MELLONG GRAND CLASSICS HIGHLIGHTS:
Six more programs remain in the BNY Mellon Grand Classics subscription series for the 2021-2022 season. Music Director Manfred Honeck leads three concert weekends, David Afkham leads one, and conductors Nathalie Stutzmann and Matthias Pintscher each make their Pittsburgh debuts in the remaining two. Pianists Yefim Bronfman, Beatrice Rana and Emanuel Ax return to Heinz Hall this spring, while violinists Daniel Lozakovich and Alexi Kenney also make their Pittsburgh debuts as soloists.

The Pittsburgh Symphony is thrilled to welcome back to the stage its long-time choral partner, the outstanding Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, in a long-awaited return of performance of orchestral works with chorus takes place on April 30 with a performance of Beethoven Symphony No. 9 at Heinz Hall, the capstone of Bank of America Symphony Week. The Mendelssohn Choir will also join Manfred Honeck and the Orchestra for the Pittsburgh premiere of Antonina Dvorak’s Te Deum, a joyful, spectacular work that heralded Dvorak’s move to America.

Two additional livestreams and radio simulcasts on WQED-FM (89.3) have been added to the BNY Mellon Grand Classics series. The programs are hosted by WQED-FM’s Jim Cunningham, with special guest interviews at intermission, and are directed by seven-time EMMY Award winning director Habib Azar. Viewers will see an updated look to the Pittsburgh Symphony’s virtual streaming platform, PSO Front Row, psofrontrow.org. Livestreams begin at 7:30 p.m., and concerts radio broadcasts begin at 8:00 p.m. The livestream and radio simulcast programs are: “Bronfman Plays Rachmaninoff” on Friday, April 22, 2021, and “Emanuel Ax Plays Mozart” on Friday, June 19, 2021.

SPRING 2022 PNC POPS HIGHLIGHTS:
The 2021-2022 PNC Pops season continues with performances of “To Marvin: With Love” in May and “Dancing in the Street: The Music of Motown” in June.

From May 13-15, conductor Jack Everly and vocalist Marissa McGowan present “To Marvin, With Love,” which celebrates the memory of Marvin Hamlisch with a program of favorites from his storied career and momentous history with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra as its first Principal Pops Conductor.

The PNC Pops 2021-2022 season closes out with sensational Principal Pops Conductor Byron Stripling as he leads “Dancing in the Street: The Music of Motown” from June 24-26. Vocalists Chester Gregory, Michael Lynche and Shayna Steele join Stripling to bring some of Motown music’s biggest smash hits to life.

ACCESSIBILITY IMPROVEMENT: NEW AUDIO DESCRIPTION EQUIPMENT AT HEINZ HALL
The Pittsburgh Symphony and Heinz Hall have extended their commitment to accessibility and inclusive experiences for all concert patrons with newly installed audio description equipment at Heinz Hall. The system, serving patrons who are blind or have low vision, became available for the first time at “Warner Bros. Presents Bugs Bunny at the Symphony” on April 10, 2022. Audio description is a form of live narration that informs listeners of key visual elements of a production during the live broadcast, providing accessibility to the sights and images of that production to benefit patrons that are blind or low vision. This system is available to patrons on request in advance.

SCHOOLTIME PROGRAMS AT HEINZ HALL AND ONLINE AVAILABLE FOR EDUCATORS THROUGH JUNE 30
Schooltime concerts return to Heinz Hall for the first time in two years on May Three virtual schooltime units from the 2021-2022 season—“Meet the Orchestra” and “What Makes Jazz?” with Principal Pops Conductor Byron Stripling, and “Origin Stories” with conductor Daniel Meyer and host Mikael Owunna—will continue to be available online for educators and their students through June 30, 2022.
