PITTSBURGH, 11/9/2023—The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO) announced today the addition of two concerts to its 2023-2024 season: Windborne’s The Music of Pink Floyd: A Rock Symphony on February 27 and A Night at the Symphony with Laufey on June 25. For details, visit pittsburghsymphony.org or the Heinz Hall Box Office on Penn Ave. in downtown Pittsburgh. Ticket prices for each concert start at $25.

WINDBORNE’S THE MUSIC OF PINK FLOYD – February 27, 2024 @ 7:30PM at Heinz Hall
Bridging the gulf between rock n’ roll and classical music, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will perform The Music of Pink Floyd amplified by a full rock band and accompanied by singer Randy Jackson’s dynamic vocals. Creator Brent Havens will guest conduct the ensemble as they capture Pink Floyd’s ethereal flow of music and effects while churning out new musical colors.

“My concept for The Music of Pink Floyd was to take the music as close to the originals as we could and then add some colors to enhance what the original group had done,” says Havens. “The wonderful thing with an orchestra is that you have an entire palette to call upon. The band is reproducing what Pink Floyd did on the albums as closely as possible, and then having an orchestra behind the band gives the music a richness, a whole different feel, a whole different sense of depth.”

Delivering vocals out front, singer Randy Jackson acts as a window between the audience and reworked material. “The music itself is one thing, but Jackson more than captures the spirit of the original singers,” says Havens. The 2-plus hour concert features 17 Pink Floyd tunes, including “Money,” “Learning to Fly,” “Comfortably Numb,” and selections from “The Wall.”

A NIGHT AT THE SYMPHONY WITH LAUFEY – June 25, 2023 @ 7:30PM at Heinz Hall
“As a musician, my goal is to bring jazz and classical music to my generation through a more accessible road,” declares the composer, singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Laufey (pronounced lāy-vāy).

In 2022, the Icelandic-Chinese artist’s trailblazing approach paid off, with a performance on Jimmy Kimmel LIVE! in support of her first full-length Everything I Know About Love, sold out tours of North America, Asia, and Australia, and she was the most streamed jazz artist of the year on Spotify.

Raised in D.C. and Reykjavik, with Icelandic and Chinese roots, Laufey’s classical piano and cello training from her mother collided with her love for her father’s jazz records to create a contemporary and eclectic musical style. Her 2022 album, A Night at the Symphony, described by NME as “candid self-expression wrapped in the dreamy lilt of the old jazz standards,” foreshadows her captivating debut with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. She weaves her unique storytelling and spellbinding voice with influences from Ravel, Chopin, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday.
